While chatting to one of my 1:1 clients this week I said to her engage your core or turn on your core, she replied what do you mean by this, I have always wondered what this means….

To me it’s something I do everyday without thinking but to most people I train this seems to be a common theme.

So how do you engage your core and why engage your core?

Let’s start with the why?

Engaging your core protects your back from injury, helps for better stability and function.

The best way to describe turning on your core is to brace and to do this is to think about how you would react if you were about to receive a punch to your belly (other than running away 🙂 – you would brace.

You should be able to breathe easily and not hold your breath while core is engaged.

The best time to practice engaging your muscles is when lying down or I like to practice doing this when cutting up veges for dinner.
