Dan Carter has announced he will take 6 months off rugby – In his words…..

“I love playing rugby and I’m fully committed to the Crusaders and the All Blacks. But when you play the game fulltime at this level it does take a toll on your body, I’ve had a few injury niggles over recent years, so I’m keen to ensure I do everything I can to recover fully from those and prolong my career. Ultimately, I want to play in the next Rugby World Cup in 2015. To do that, it’s important that I put myself in the best possible position, both physically and mentally.”

Although sad for NZ rugby- this is a great decision it is so important to take the time to rest and recover.

Rest days are critical to sports performance for a variety of reasons. Some are physiological and some are psychological. Rest is physically necessary so that the muscles can repair, rebuild and strengthen. For recreational athletes, building in rest days can help maintain a better balance between home, work and fitness goals.

So don’t forget your rest days team!
